Services

- Beta Reading
I will provide feedback to you on your manuscript from a reader’s perspective by answering questions you submit regarding content. Depending on word count, turnaround time may be 1–2 weeks. $0.0015 per word - Manuscript Evaluation – an affordable alternative to developmental editing
If you know your manuscript needs content help but you can’t afford coaching or developmental editing, this may be a good choice for you. I will assess the flow, pace, plot structure, character development/quality, and readability. I will make comments in Track Changes and will prepare a 5–7 page report addressing improvable areas. $.015 per word - Line Editing – a line-by-line content edit
A line edit involves a focus on word use, writing style, and sentence structure to improve flow and readability and provide cohesive transitions between paragraphs, scenes, and chapters. I will use Microsoft Word’s Track Changes to make changes and suggestions. $.022 per word - Copyediting
I will read through your manuscript twice. I will correct PUGS (punctuation, grammar, word usage, spelling), lightly correct or otherwise flag formatting, check consistency with quotes and passages, address misplaced modifiers, and flag any content issues that may need attention. (Author is required to provide sources for any quotations.) All work will be done in Track Changes of Microsoft Word.
$.018 per word – nonfiction memoirs and fiction
$.019 per word – any other nonfiction (for any source or scripture fact-checking, footnotes, end notes, bibliography content) - Proofreading – The final step before publishing
A proofread is the tidying up of a manuscript after a copyedit has already been done. If you have not had your manuscript professionally edited, it will need to go through that process before a proofread can take place.
I will correct PUGS, check for widows/orphans, examine headers/footers, flag formatting errors or inconsistencies, and review front and back matter. Edits will take place on your PDF or Word document. $.009/word
If you aren’t sure what level of editing you need, I can do a
free sample edit of your novel and advise you.

“Why is it so expensive to hire an editor?“
Imagine how long it takes you to write your manuscript. It’s time-consuming, and you’re very specific with your craft. Professional editors are specific, too, and the goal is to help authors make their work the best it can be.
The Editorial Freelancers Association has a list of average hourly rates that freelance editors have reported charging. You can look at my rates to get an idea of how my fees stack in comparison.
The editing process…
When you contact me, your editing needs will be determined. We will develop a work agreement based on what type of service you need, and a sample edit can allow me to determine how long the work will take to complete. Once those are determined, we’ll sign a contract. Fifty percent of the total fee is due at that point and editing will begin.
Editing will take place using Microsoft Word with Track Changes unless we’re working with a PDF proofed copy; in that case, editing will take place using Adobe. I will make corrections, suggestions, and leave comments. Manuscript evaluations, line edits, and copyedits also are accompanied by an editorial letter explaining changes and suggestions and may list resources you can utilize to aid the writing/editing process.
Once the work is completed, the edited copy will be sent to you. If I have performed a line edit or copyedit, you may make changes with the edited content and resubmit your changes for a second check, free of charge. If further revisions are desired, each additional round of editing will be charged at 20% of the original total editing fee.
Disclaimer
I am invested in bringing out the best in my clients’ work. However, no editor can guarantee error-free editing, and we cannot guarantee successful writing careers or award-winning books. While I do my best to find all errors and make helpful suggestions within the scope of the edit being performed, I don’t promise a 100 percent error-free edit.
