A good mystery with a romantic twist thrown in for good measure makes an enjoyable read. A Vast and Gracious Tide by Lisa Carter was an entertaining read!

McKenna is a young lady who has loved and lost–her fiance, that is. With Shawn’s death, McKenna said goodbye also to her love of dancing. The joy of that went with the loss of Shawn. Instead, she throws herself into helping with the family restaurant and helping take care of her grandmother. A man named Bryce, a local policeman, decides to insert himself in McKenna’s life. While she respects him and is fond of him, there’s just no spark there.
Caden is a wounded veteran who is new in town. Caden has come to return a quilt that was given to him while he was in the hospital. When he and McKenna meet, Caden is drawn to her. However, being the newcomer, he is quickly blamed for a recent set of murders happening in the town. Bryce is the main one pointing a finger at Caden.
Author Lisa Carter did a nice job fleshing out Grandmother Lovey, and I specifically enjoyed the character Earlene–she was a dear. There is a scene in a beauty salon that I really enjoyed–lots of detail and humor in that scene.
I felt that the conflict between the two main characters was a bit forced at times. The sudden explosive tirades between them confused me a little–I would have liked to have seen a little more building tension prior to the tirades.
Lisa did a tremendous job of describing scenes. I could easily picture in my head what the area looked like. She clearly pays attention to detail!
A Vast and Gracious Tide was a bit too predictable, I felt. Maybe that was Lisa’s idea–I’m not sure. It was early on in the story, though, that I knew who the problem was and what was going on with McKenna’s father. However, recognizing the mystery didn’t detract from enjoying the story. I do feel, though, that there could have been a little more mystery thrown in there.
A strong feeling of healing is interwoven into this story. The main characters both have their share of hurt, anger and trust issues. A gentle but effective (and gradual) transition into recovery and healing takes place between them.
