Summary:

Love is important, but it is respect that is the key to your son’s heart.

The idea of moms respecting their sons may sound alien to some, but it seems to ignite curiosity across the board. It is easy to relate to the need for all of us to feel a mother’s love, but is that the same thing as respect? Even for young boys, the effect of respect is nothing short of astounding when applied properly.

Moms yearn to learn anything that better helps them with their sons. After all, they love their boys, but many find them more difficult to parent than their girls, especially from age four and up.

What makes this all the more urgent is that moms are coaching fathers to love their daughters, but no one has said boo to moms on specific ways to show respect to their sons, at least not in a way that is applicable and fully explained. All realize that little girls need daddy’s love, but who is strongly promoting the truth that little boys (and big ones) need Mom's respect? No wonder mothers feel left in the dark on this topic.

Just as Emerson Eggerichs transformed millions of marital relationships with a biblical understanding of love and respect, he now turns these principles to one of the most important relationships of all, a mother and her son.

I’m a mother of three sons and they need my respect.

That’s cliche, I know. My boys mean the world to me, but sometimes I have a problem communicating with them. There’s a different dynamic between my boys and their dad than between them and me. I often struggle with the right words to get my boys to understand what I’m trying to say, especially when I’m trying to correct their behavior. I don’t want to crush their spirits, but at the same time I want them to learn from their mistakes and take their mistakes seriously.

Mother & Son: The Respect Effect comes at an appropriate time, because, to me, there’s never an inappropriate time for me to learn how to communicate with my sons in a positive way.

The book focuses on how to talk to your son in a way that builds the respect factor. Mother & Son helps moms to see and recognize his innate motivation for competition, always being right (c’mon, Moms, you know your sons are that way sometimes!), his thoughts about relationships and sexuality.

msq1One of my biggest problems in communicating with my sons is how to correct them in a manner that gets right to the point. I hate long, drawn-out lectures. It wastes my time. But half the time that I’m talking, I’m looking into a face that isn’t registering any recognition or acceptation of what I’m trying to say. My lectures become half an hour long in my attempt to connect, and even then I don’t always feel like he understands me.

msq2 When I had the opportunity to review this book, I jumped on it. I’ve been a mother to males for nearly 17 years, and I know that I don’t have all the answers. Not even close. I’m not afraid to accept the fact that I still have learning to do, and I’m sure I always will.

About the Book:

A new book from W Publishing Group/HarperCollins asks you to consider the all–important mother/son relationship in a new way: respect, as in the mother should respect the son.

Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, author of Love and Respect – a landmark book that transformed millions of marital relationships – is launching his latest book, Mother & Son: The Respect Effect.

In Mother & Son, Dr. Eggerichs proposes that while showing love is important to a son, showing him respect is key to his heart, and what will transform the mother/son relationship. Of course, to a lot of people, that will sound backwards – shouldn’t it start with the son respecting the mother??
Since the importance of the mother/son relationship crosses all age/race/religion barriers, this is a topic applicable to all – regardless if they agree or disagree with Dr. Eggerichs’ method.
